Chapter Five
Shane left the community center, drove to Nikâs then parked. He hurried up to his boyfriendâs condo. God. He just wanted to get the hell away from Don. Yes, Don hadnât done anything yet, but he knew Donâs past. Heâd felt his fists. He refused to be a punching bag again, but damn it. Having Don so close wasnât good. Don knew how to work around rules and get his way.
Nik parked his car behind Shaneâs and joined him on the stoop. âFunny seeing you here.â He grinned. âCome here often?â
âI do.â He palmed Nikâs ass. âAnd youâll come soon, too.â
âNik?â An older woman Shane sort of recognized rushed up to them. âNik?â
âMrs. Flowers.â Nik unlocked the door. âHi. Whatâs wrong?â
âI canât reach the light in the hallway and I need help changing the bulb. I canât see a thing and itâs scary.â She held the light bulb. âPlease?â
Nik sighed and let go of Shane. âIâll be right back.â He turned his attention to Mrs. Flowers. âSure. Let me put my bag down. Mrs. Flowers, this is Shane Sutton, my boyfriend. Shane, this is my neighbor, Mrs. Flowers.â
âHi.â Shane smiled and tossed his bag into the condo. âNice to meet you.â Now he remembered her. Sheâd come to one exercise class, decided she didnât like the other participants, and left.
âBoyfriend?â Mrs. Flowers nodded. âI still think youâd be better off with my niece.â
Nik groaned. âIâll be right back.â He kissed Shane and tossed his bag onto the floor just inside the condo. âMake yourself at home.â
âTake your time.â Shane ducked into the condo and flipped on a couple lights. He could see himself living here. Strange, since he hadnât planned on leaving his apartment. Sure, his place wasnât big, but it was his. Now he wanted to share his life with Nik and theyâd need a bigger space than his apartment.
He kicked out of his shoes, then picked up his bag and carried it to the bedroom. He closed the blinds before stripping. As he yanked his shirt over his head, he spotted the photos on the dresser and couldnât look away. He knew some of the people in the imagesâhim and Nik in school, Nik with a group of people Shane assumed were other teachers, Nikâs parents and a photo of him with Shane when they were in the seventh grade and had just finished their first cross-country race. Theyâd been so young and innocent back then.
He smiled. He regretted not making a move on Nik back in school, but theyâd found each other now. He loved Nik and soon heâd be able to tell him as much.
He strode into the bathroom and turned on the water in the stall. Within minutes, steam billowed and rustled the curtain. Shane waited a second before venturing into the shower. The hot water stung his body. He bowed his head, letting the heat and pain wash over him as well as wash away the tension and chlorine. Heâd done so much in the last few days.
